Department of Commerce

ORIGIN AND GROWTH The institution rightly recognized the importance of commerce as a subject of study and incorporated it in its main curriculum right from its inception. The commerce department has the privilege of being the most populous department at Patrician College consisting of around 470 students. The growth of the department has been tremendous over the years which have led it to be partitioned into two sections in the year 2007.

FUNCTIONING AND OPPORTUNITIES
Academics are the primary part of the student’s life at Patrician College and we as a department have had more opportunities than the others to teach different departments and contribute to overall academic development.

The department ensures practical knowledge of subjects by encouraging students to go on industrial visits .The department has also conducted seminars,guest lectures and exhibitions wherein the students have gained know how to develop broader perspective of their existing knowledge. The staff guides the students in general to prepare to face the university exam and encourage them to take up extra curricular activites, social service activities under the name “COMET”. Students are also motivated to take up professional courses later in life, like MBA, MCA, MCom; CA, ICWA, ACS, CFA etc.

Comet The academic year 2010-2011 was eventful for the department which conducts its various activities under the association name 'COMET'. The department secretaries were Javeeth Sultan and Savia Bernadeth. The year began with joyful note when the students of the association were nominated and elected for the various posts in the student's union elections. The following students hold the various posts in the union:

  • John Frnakline- III BCom – Chariman
  • Jasmine Vijily- III BCom- Sports Secretary
  • Manikandan- III BCom- Treasurer

The department has encouraged the students to participate in various intercollegiate competitions so as to give them a platform for overall development. They participated in various renowned colleges like DG Vaishnav, SIET, Mar Gregorious College, Alpha College of Arts and Science, Annai Vellankani College, MGR Janaki College, Ethiraj College, Anna Adarsh College and St. Thomas College.

Students also excelled in the field of sports. They bagged the overall winners up trophy in the interdepartmental sports meet 2010. Apart from this students also participated in the cricket tournament held at AM Jain College, Sindhi College etc. and also participated in throw ball matches.

The department has conducted Inter-Departmental competitions for developing the creative skills of the students.

The final year students were taken for an education trip for three days to Cochin and Munaar.

Intercollegiate competitions, along with Department of management and corporate secretaryship were conducted in the name 'MASOBATRA'. A National level seminar was also conducted on the topic 'Transformation, Adaptation and sustainability for future growth....' On 5th March in the name 'KALEIDOSCOPE', a consolidated journal of articles and CD containing all the abstracts of the various articles were released.

EVENING COLLEGE The evening college wing of Patrician College has a section for commerce that together we will be shooting stars with speed above others and light to shine in the darkness.
